Here’s a video i recently finished (not for class – dont worry). Thought I’d post it here because I was influences by the psycho geography project. It’s like a psycho geography but instead of on a location or area, its of my life as an “adult” [since I turned 18]. I used lots and lots and LOTS of my pictures (not all because I take an obscene amount of pictures) to create sort of a chronological flip book of what I’ve done in the last three years. Each photo is only four frames.

Also on my vimeo site is my Self Portrait I made in Adele’s Digital Movie Making class last semester. It was in the Bite Your Tongue festival. The other video (10 Photos) I made maybe 2 years ago. I took ten photos of myself on Photobooth making different faces and made me lip-synch a song.

Weed, good or bad? the media doesnt seem to know

My mash-up is on weed’s portrayal in the media. I mashed together old anti-weed ads from the 50′s, family guy, pineapple express and walk hard and i did this to show that the media… “The man” doesnt give us a clear message about weed. We are told by above the influence commercials that weed is terrible and will lead to horrible drugs like heroin and meth, but movies like pineapple express make us think weed is just a fun drug that you can do in excess with no bad side effects. WELL WHICH IS IT?! I used the song “hip hop” by dead prez to also represent the hip hop industry’s influence on the thoughts behind marijuana usage.

i found this on stumbleupon, it’s a great way to waste hours looking at ridiculous shit on the internet. But it’s a great site, for those that don’t know about it definitely check it out. So anywhere, i found this and it isn’t quite a psycho geography but it uses the same techniques. It basically is a series of still images, check it out:

I could go on, but i think everyone gets the idea: “Thriller”, the dance, the song, the music video, is a meme because it is easily recognizable, so much so that it has made other people create their own versions of the monumental video or dance.

I do not believe it is possible to participate in a culture jam without helping the meme spread. Someone can not participate in a culture jam unless they understand the meme that goes along with it.

Pepsi: Diabetes

To a person not familiar with the Pepsi logo this might look like “DIOBETES” with a red, white and blue “O” which means nothing. But because we know this meme, we know that symbol is Pepsi, and this is their most recent ad campaign, and because we know Pepsi is a sugary soda we can understand the message of this culture jam. Therefore, Pepsi is still being advertised in someway. The Pepsi symbol is still being looked at and you know what they say, “There’s no such thing as bad press.”

I think to have an effective culture jam the message and the meme have to be related. For example, this ipod culture jam doesn’t send any message to me. I understand what it has to do with Iraq, and I get the whole iPod silhouette but this does not tell me what iPods and Iraq have to do with each other. It sends no message about iPods and the only message it sends about Iraq is that there are people tied to ropes there. Yeah, that sucks, I get it, but come up with a better culture jam to say it!

As for a real choice in media consumption, I believe that unless ad agencies get their high-tech hypnotizing game up, humans will always have some choice. You can not blame your love handles on McDonald’s. It is ultimately the consumer’s decision to purchase or not purchase an item. Yes, McDonald’s does have deliciously fattening grease which will build up in your arteries and although there is no proof of this yet there has to be some sort of addictive substance in there, but it is still the consumer who opens his or her wallet or purse and shells out the money for it.

Being a stenciler myself, I love me some Banksy, so here is a dossier for him:

As you can see, not a lot is known about Banksy, so I’ll give you a list of awesome things he’s done and photos so you can see how awesome he is yourself…

At London Zoo, he climbed into the penguin enclosure and painted “We’re bored of fish” in seven foot high letters.^[51]
At Bristol Zoo, he left the message ‘I want out. This place is too cold. Keeper smells. Boring, boring, boring.’ in the elephant enclosure.
In March 2005, he placed subverted artworks in the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
He put up a subverted painting in London’s Tate Britain gallery.
In May 2005 Banksy’s version of a primitive cave painting depicting a human figure hunting wildlife whilst pushing a shopping trolley was hung in gallery 49 of the British Museum, London. Upon discovery, they added it to their permanent collection.

In August/September 2006, Banksy replaced up to 500 copies of Paris Hilton‘s debut CD, Paris, in 48 different UK record stores with his own cover art and remixes by Danger Mouse. Music tracks were given titles such as “Why am I Famous?”, “What Have I Done?” and “What Am I For?”. Several copies of the CD were purchased by the public before stores were able to remove them, some going on to be sold for as much as £750 on online auction websites such as eBay. The cover art depicted Paris Hilton digitally altered to appear topless. Other pictures feature her with a dog’s head replacing her own, and one of her stepping out of a luxury car, edited to include a group of homeless people, which included the caption “90% of success is just showing up”.
In September 2006, Banksy dressed an inflatable doll in the manner of a Guantanamo Bay detainment camp prisoner (orange jumpsuit, black hood, and handcuffs) and then placed the figure within the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride at the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, California.
